The most expensive house in the world is Antillia, it is located in the south of Mumbai and is owned by the Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Mukesh Ambani is the owner of Reliance Industries, Ltd. In 2008, the price of the house was estimated to be 50-70 million US dollars. But according to recent reports by Forbes Magazine, the house is believed to be USD 1 billion. It was made as a personal residence on Altamount Road. The construction started in 2002 and it took eight years for its completion.
Coming to the structural details, this house towers up to 570 ft. (170 m). The house is basically a skyscraper which has twenty seven stories. Its floor area is thirty seven thousand meter square. The house has a total of eleven elevators. This house is designed by Chicago architects, Perkins + Wills. Leighton Holdings is an Austrian construction company which began its construction. The house has extra high ceiling which may make for 60 stories with 157 m total height. The house was specially designed to withstand the earthquake of eight Richter scale. The house needs permanent staff of at least six hundred members to keep its maintenance. Having all these luxuries no doubt make Antillia the most expensive house in the world.
The property has three helipads and six floors of parking! It is a unique house of its own kind. It has series of floating gardens on the outer body of the house. Mukesh Ambani, who is ranked as the ninth wealthiest man on earth, hasn’t moved into the house which he called his “dream house”. Reporters say that the reason why Mukesh Ambani didn’t move along with his family in this most expensive house in the world is that it doesn’t fulfill the architectural principles of vashushastra. Vashushastra, according to ancient Indian Mythology is a philosophy of emphasizing on rising sun. As the sun rises from the eastern side in India, the building should have windows on its eastern side. But Antillia is said to not to have enough windows which is why Mukesh Ambani along with his wife Nita and two children haven’t moved to the house. Instead, they are living in their fourteen story apartment tower in the south of the city which they share with their other family members.
Many people have criticized the construction of such a big house in a country where more than eighty percent of the people live below poverty line. Many big company chairmen have criticized it by stating that this building represents lack of empathy for the poor among rich Indians.
This house is named after a mythical island in Antarctica with the same name. They are basically a set of islands in the mythology that dates back to Iberian legends of 8th century. According to the legends, when Muslims conquered Hispania (Spain), Christian bishops and parishioners fled and after few days, landed on the isles of Antillia.
The total cost on the construction was though 50-70 USD, due to the rising costs of the construction and other neighboring structures in Mumbai, the current value is speculated to be as much as $1 billion or more which makes Antillia the most expensive house in the world ever built.
