When the drilling started, the ground on which the rig was set, collapsed forming a wide crater. Huge amounts of methane were released into the air. There was an immediate environmental threat t all the people living in the vicinity.
The engineers decided to set fire to the gases and burn them out completely within a few weeks. However, it is still burning after forty years.
